I. RUFFIAN
Sie war eine perfekt
gebaute, große, nahezu schwarze, hoffnungsvolle Vollblutstute. In
keinem ihrer Rennen lag sie je auch nur eine Nasenlänge hinten.
Sie gewann jedes ihrer 10 Rennen, im Durchschnitt mit 8 1/2 Längen, deklassierte und brach das Herz
ihrer Konkurrentinnen, brach oder egalisierte bei jedem Start den
Bahnrekord, gewann die "Filly Triple Crown". Sie stob der Konkurrenz
auf der letzten Viertelmeile einfach davon, und es sah auch noch
unglaublich leicht aus. Viele die sie rennen sahen, sind auch heute
noch überzeugt dass sie das schnellste Pferd war, das je eine
Rennstrecke betrat. Ganz sicher jedenfalls war sie die Vollblutstute
des Jahrhunderts.
Bis zu jenem tragischen, letzten Rennen 1975, dem Duell gegen den
Kentucky Derby Sieger Hengst Foolish Pleasure, betitelt als "Great
Match", "Race of the Champions" oder gar "Battle of the Sexes". Noch
auf dem Backstretch, eine Viertellänge in Führung liegend,
brach sie sich ein Vorderbein, blieb aber auf den Beinen. Ihr Jockey
kämpfte, die Stute zum Stehen zu bringen. Nach stundenlanger
Not-OP der zermalmten Sesambeine zerbrach sie beim Aufspringen aus der
Narkose den Gips, und das andere, gesunde Vorderbein (noch immer gilt
es nicht als Stand tierärztlicher Technik Pferde nach solchen OP's
in Tragegurte zu hängen). Die ganze amerikanische Nation trauerte.
RUFFIAN war nur drei Jahre alt.
Winning the Filly Triple Crown in 1975, died in a age of three,
after breakdown in her final race announced as the "Great Match",
"Battle of the
sexes"
and "Race of the Champions", against the best
male racehorse of her time,
Kentucky Derby winner "Foolish Pleasure". She
broke a fore leg, leaving a whole nation in deep dolor on that day.
She was a perfect, tall black mare who had won all of her ten
races before in an amazing style, leaving so much daylight
to the second place that many people seen her racing, decades
after her tragic death, still
firmly believe that she was the fastest racehorse who ever saw the
track. At least, she was the female racehorse/ filly of the century.
Why then
she broke down on that tragic day? Probably she was too
young and
her legs weren't trained hard enough for such a strong competition,
beeing raced
always against fillies before that day.

she showed the whole world that Girls can be ruffians too..!"
